Brno Dragon - Otta Buchberger
On Friday, May 24, 2024, Otto Buchberger died at the age of 90. An enthusiast from Brno who competed with factory teams in the sixties with hand-built formulas. Let's dedicate the Brno GP Revival as a memory of Otto.
His Dragon was one of the best cars of the Czechoslovak Formula 3 Championship of its time. In addition to his formulas, the talented technician also participated in the construction of the chassis of other cars for Brno riders. Buchberger built his first formula on the threshold of thirty. In the evenings, in free time. All three Buchberger formulas were given the name Drak. The Brno patriot and his friends learned along the way during their construction. He built the first car in four months. He raced it for two years, then sold it and shut himself up in the workshop again. And again in two years. He raced only the most advanced two-stroke Drake III from Wartburg for three seasons. Leaving aside the Škodovka factory team from Mladá Boleslav, which had the advantage of the car company's support, Buchberger's cars were among the Czechoslovak elite at the time. Otto Buchberger retired from racing in 1971.
Unfortunately, Buchberger did not make it to this year's Revival, but the organizers want to pay tribute to him. Two Drak formulas will be presented at the event. Karel Jaroš will drive the most elaborate Dragon III, Dragon I will be driven by his son-in-law Milan Okáč. Both cars will also be displayed in the depot. The Buchberger Dragons will once again taste the asphalt of the "new" Brno circuit.
