Formula on the Brno exhibition grounds
Formula car racing is called the queen of motorsport. On the 15th and 16th of July, their engines roar again after fifty years between the pavilions of the Brno exhibition center. Among them will also be Karel Mencl with his Delfín, who started here at the time.
Formula 3 car races were always among the highlights of the program of every race in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1960s. At the Brno Revival Mezi pavilony event, we will see several dozen of these cars rescued by careful collectors. It will be a true return to the scene for Formula 3 from the 1960s. Between 1964 and 1967, their races at the Brno exhibition grounds were one of the most watched domestic motoring events. Among the drivers will be direct participants in all races Otto Buchberger, Zdeněk Křivohlavý and Karel Mencl.
Karel Mencl (* 1941) like many others, got into motor sports during his military service in Dukla, where he was a mechanic at the motocross, but also actively rode on road circuits with a 250 Walter. After the military service, he joined the group of racers around Vladimír Znojemský from Čelákovice, where several Formula 3 Delfín were born according to documentation from Kopřivnice Ing. Bagpipes. Karel acquired the components for one chassis in the winter of 1966, spent many nights with his brother Pavel, and in April 1967 he successfully completed the spring testing in Hoškovice. Then nothing prevented him from starting his first Czechoslovak Formula 3 championship race on May 1st – the Mezi pavilony race at the Brno exhibition grounds. After fifty years, Karel Mencl will return to the race track with his formula at the Brno Revival Between Pavilions!
Brno Revival Mezi pavilony is being prepared by the Czechoslovak Auto Club for Moravia and Silesia, which continues the tradition of organizing the pre-war Czechoslovak Grand Prix at the Masaryk circuit.
